Odaiko Sonora
Founded in May 2002 by Rome Hamner and Karen Falkenstrom, Odaiko Sonora strives to uphold and expand the instruction and performance of taiko, the artistic, powerful, and physically demanding discipline of Japanese ensemble drumming. It is the only arts educational organization in southern Arizona dedicated solely to taiko. Odaiko Sonora offers classes, performance, team-building and cultural workshops, and school residencies throughout our region, performing for over 12,000 people each year.
Cliff Berrien
Cliff was born in Washington DC where he was first exposed to the marvelous world of drumming. He studied African and Afro-Cuban percussion and drumming there with Tony Duncanson and played in a variety of ensembles. He moved to the west coast in 1980 where he met, studied & performed with Brazilian percussionist Alyrio Lima. He has traveled and worked extensively in Brazil. He studied music at Pima Community College and the U of A and presently is the director of Batucaxé, a 30 piece Afro-Brazilian percussion and dance ensemble inspired by the music of Brazil.
Brian J. Harris
Brian has been hitting things since he was a small child and now enjoys it as a livelihood. In addition to holding a position in the Tucson Symphony Orchestra percussion section for twelve years, he has played drum set and percussion with dozens of rock, jazz, and Latin groups. His 900 square foot teaching facility hosts over forty weekly percussion students. His beginning snare drum book and CD entitled The Snare Drum Plays the Zoo is used by percussion instructors around the world to teach young snare drum students.
Homero Ceron
Currently Principal percussion/assistant timpani with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Homero is an experienced music educator in fields ranging from artist in residence at pre-school centers, to heading the percussion department at Pima College. He has written and recorded music for film and television as well as performed in theater, opera, chamber music, and jazz groups. Homero is also the leader of "Cool Breeze," a Latin-American-flavored combo based in Tucson, Arizona. Homero was recently signed as a Southwestern U.S. Yamaha artist.
Todd M. Hammes
Todd is a performer and composer of distinction. He has extensively studied western contemporary music and the musics of many cultures with some of the best artists of our time, including Pandit Sharda Sahai of Benaris, India, Glen Velez, and Bob Becker. A performer on well over 1000 events and many recordings, Todd has released several of his own. He also teaches privately and leads workshops, clinics, and master classes in hand drumming.
Homero, Todd, and I look forward to seeing you at the camp this year!
Sincerely,
Brian J. Harris
